OUR HISTORY
Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. carries a history that runs deeper than names and dates. Founded on the principles of individuality, pride, trust, dignity, womanhood, and love, we are built on the vision of creating a unique and lasting sisterhood. We welcome all women who wish to honor and preserve their cultural customs, values, and beliefs while uniting under the strength of sisterhood.

We were established on April 29, 1980, becoming the first independent Latin sorority in the nation, and officially joined the Rutgers University Greek community on March 11, 1981. CUS emerged during a time of transformation, when women were demanding greater self-representation and building organizations of their own. Our Founders believed a brother organization was unnecessary to achieve true sisterhood—a conviction that remains steadfast in the hearts of sisters across generations.

Our seven Founders—seven Latinas with a bold vision—created CUS as a space that promotes leadership, celebrates culture, and builds family. They envisioned an organization where women could find empowerment and community, and that vision has grown into a diverse sisterhood of women from all ethnicities and cultures. What unites us is respect for one another and a commitment to the ideals of our Founding Mothers, grounded in empowerment and cultural appreciation.

Today, we remain devoted to our mission: to cultivate political, educational, social, and cultural awareness, both within our sisterhood and beyond—across Rutgers University - New Brunswick and the broader community. CUS is more than an organization; it is a promise of love, pride, and respect for all sisters. Through this promise, the dream of CUS lives on, stronger with every generation.
